The palm has an arch to it pointing inward to the knuckles. Incorporate this backward curve when drawing hands with fingers flaring out, or the drawing will not look natural.Ĥ. When fingers are extended, their shape has a backward curve to it.

The middle finger is the longest and is at the apex of an arch created by the fingers when they are extended.ģ. These masses shift, the palm folds, but the changes are minimal compared to the movement of the fingers.Ģ. There are two main masses to deal with when drawing the hand: that of the palm and the one of the thumb attached to it. Keep the following in mind when observing the shapes you are drawing:ġ. Look at good reference and try to carefully observe what goes into the shape outline of the hand, what features are visible? Study the shape of the palm and build the shape from there. The Ishy Sail pencil grip has been used with kids with joint and finger weakness with great success. My daughter has hyper-mobile joints, and she hyper-extends at the DIPs of her index and middle finger when she writes.

So once I knew the shape that I needed to make it, I made molds out of plastic, and pour high quality skin safe silicone into the molds so that they are the same every time. I made the design so that it facilitates a regular tripod grasp, and also so that it could easily and naturally be held in the modified grasp (pencil between the index and middle finger) as well since that grasp is the most efficient when it comes to muscle use. It has a curved shelf that the thumb is on, which keeps the thumb in a gentle curve. I kept coming back to a specific shape of grip, and it seemed to block the thumb hyper-extension the best. It did help me try out different shapes to see which would be most beneficial, and to have the kids use it for an extended period of time. It kind of worked, but it was not easy or efficient. I took my clay trials to the next step by making molds out of spare splinting material and using silicone putty from Michaels to press into the molds. It is also impossible to sculpt it exactly the same every time. It is not a sturdy material though, and one kid immediately shredded it.

Model magic worked the best for me to as a trial to see if I could get the hand to comfortable hold the pencil. To solve this problem, I started making pencil grips out of play doh, clay, and model magic. That is why I have created a new pencil grip called the Ishy Sail Pencil Grip. If they weren’t having to work so hard at keeping a hold on their pencil, they might be able to work on classroom writing activities much better. I want to help them to be able to participate.
